Education All Around
Curriculum builds community at Douglass Valley. Students work together and see each other as individuals as they connect through academics. Wonders small group reading, Eureka math, Write Now Right Now, and Common Core science and social studies provide a learning base.
One Size Fits None
Military family or transitioning from homeschooling, no Douglass Valley student is alike. To provide consistency and help navigate change, teachers are adaptable and responsive, and lessons are tailored to support children no matter their level or length of stay.
More to Learn
Music, PE, and wellness are rotated weekly, with Spanish and technology integrated in the first grade. Programming, coding and engineering projects introduce STEAM learning. U.S. Air Force Academy partnerships, activities and field trips offer a unique look into the lives of those who serve.
Cultivating Character
Compassion, resiliency, respect and other valuable traits are fostered at Douglass Valley, a Positive Behavior Intervention Support School. Teachers use RULER and Capturing Kids’ Hearts to help children learn how to express themselves, manage emotions and understand others.
Homework & Home Time
Homework as an important piece of the Douglass Valley curriculum. Students discover learning takes place all the time, developing self-discipline and time management along the way. Depending on their level, students perform 10-45 minutes of homework daily, leaving room for family time as well.
Specific Programming
What I Need (WIN) Time: All first through fifth grade students attend a WIN Group from 9:15 - 10:00 a.m. daily. Since Kindergarteners are learning and applying new skills so quickly, they have their own time from 10:05 - 10:40 a.m. In both WIN blocks, fluid reading focused groups allow staff to tailor their instruction to provide targeted, explicit instruction in the areas of literacy attainment for which their group is demonstrating a need.
Dyslexia Programming: As one of Academy District 20’s Dyslexia Satellite Schools, our educators have extensive training in providing therapeutic level support to students who have characteristics of dyslexia. In addition, our staff members support the rest of our team in providing high-quality instruction in literacy throughout the day. If your student has a diagnosis or you suspect characteristics of dyslexia, please share that information so we can determine the best pathway forward.
