Learn about the programs offered by DVE that support student needs.

MTSS: Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is an approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavioral needs. The MTSS process begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom. Struggling learners are provided with interventions at increasing levels of intensity to accelerate their rate of learning. These services may be provided by a variety of personnel, including general education teachers, literacy teachers, and intervention specialists. Educational decisions about the intensity and duration of interventions are based on individual student response to instruction.

Special Education: The special education staff members of Douglass Valley Elementary are committed to creating the best educational environment for students with special needs. We serve students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs). Services may include reading, writing, and math support, occupational therapy, and speech language support.

Title I: The Title I program is part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.  A school that has been identified as Title I receives additional federal funding.  The funding is used to toward:

      • additional research-based training for teachers and specialists
      • supplemental and instructional programs and materials to be used with Title I students
      • parental involvement
      • before and after school tutoring for Title I students
      • other resources

Should your child fall below certain cut points on state approved assessments, they could be identified as a Title I student and thus be eligible for additional support.

504: A Section 504 plan describes the accommodations that the school will provide to support the student’s education. The Douglass Valley team who determined the student’s eligibility for Section 504 and identified the needed accommodations will write the accommodation plan. While Section 504 does not require a written plan, it does require documentation of evaluations and accommodations. It is very useful to have a written plan to provide clarity and direction to the individuals delivering services or making accommodations. At Douglass Valley, 504 plans are established for students needing modifications and accommodations to support their learning. Plans are updated at least annually to ensure all components of the plan are still relevant and effective. 504 plans are recognized in all public schools throughout the nation in order to ensure a smooth continuation of services and support for children.

Talented and Gifted: Primarily for students in grades 3-5, TAG classes focus on both math and language arts enrichment. Lessons are built to go deeper into these core subjects, strengthening the students' understanding, comprehension, problem-solving skills, and love of learning. Students in grades K-2 may attend weekly classes with a quarterly theme.

Military Child Support: DVE is concerned about the well-being of all students, especially those connected to the military which presents unique challenges. We have a wonderful military child and family support program that includes:

      • Deployment Kits - a bag of goodies and ideas for how to keep in touch while a family member is deployed provided by the PTO
      • Wall of Honor - Please send in a photo of your deployed family member! We'd love to add it to our American Flag wall in the main hall
      • Deployment Support Group - a weekly support group open to kids with a parent deployed for more than a month
      • Responsive Classroom – specific strategies and techniques that help kids connect with the students in their classroom as part of a supportive learning community
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS): At Douglass Valley we use PAWS to direct our school wide behavior expectations as part of our PBIS program. PAWS = Participate Responsibly, Act Kindly, Work Hard, and Show Respect. Each learning environment has a posted PAWS matrix which outlines behavior expectations for each area of the school. Below you will find a matrix for all areas at DVE.
